More information about the Hobby Caravan brand

Hobby Caravan is a renowned manufacturer of caravans and leisure vehicles based in Fockbek, Schleswig-Holstein. Since its foundation in 1967 by engineer Harald Striewski, the company has established itself as a leading supplier in the European caravanning industry. With over 50 years of experience, Hobby offers a broad portfolio of caravans characterized by high quality, innovative technologies and appealing design. The brand is aimed at various target groups - including families, couples and beginners - who value comfort, functionality and value for money.

Hobby caravans impress with well thought-out space concepts, modern equipment and high quality workmanship, which are suitable for weekend getaways as well as longer trips.

Foundation & company history

The Hobby caravan factory was founded in 1967 by Harald Striewski after he had built and successfully sold his first caravan in his garage at home in 1965 - inspired by a camping vacation in Denmark. Hobby was already producing a caravan a day in 1969, and the 5,000th model rolled off the production line in 1972.

A decisive milestone followed in 1982: Hobby became the market leader in Europe, and in 1983 also in Germany. In 1984, the company presented its first semi-integrated motorhome, the Hobby 600 - a pioneering model in terms of technology and design that achieved cult status.

Over the decades, Hobby achieved impressive production figures:

  • 150,000 caravans (1988)
  • 250.000 (1994)
  • 500.000 (2009)
  • Over 600,000 vehicles by 2019

Hobby has held a market share of around 23 % since 2000, making it one of the leading manufacturers in Europe.

In 1998, the company took over Fendt Caravan GmbH in Mertingen, which further strengthened its market position. Today, Hobby employs over 1,200 people and produces up to 13,000 caravans and 3,500 motorhomes every year. Annual sales amounted to around 350 million euros in 2023.

Innovation & Awards

Hobby has repeatedly set new standards over the decades:
Pioneering developments include the automatic reversing system, hot-dip galvanized chassis, the introduction of the cassette toilet, a CI-BUS on-board management system developed in-house and advanced energy management solutions.

Hobby has also shown innovative strength in recent times:

  • 2021 the trendy sub-brand BEACHY introduced - for a young, minimalist target audience.
  • 2022 Hobby was awarded the prestigious European Innovation Award.
  • 2023 was followed by the introduction of the MAXIA VAN based on the VW Crafter, another milestone in the premium segment.

Harald Striewski's life's work has received several awards, including the caravanning industry's „Life's Work Award“ in 2015. Even German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited the plant in Fockbek for the 50th anniversary in 2017.
